Parque del Ahuehuete - Bellezas Naturales en Atlixco

Parque del Ahuehuete

Explore the History and Beauty of Parque del Ahuehuete in Atlixco

A Corner of Tradition Since 1972:

Parque del Ahuehuete in Atlixco, Puebla, is an iconic space with roots dating back to 1972. Its construction began thanks to the initiative of then First Lady María Esther Zuno, wife of President Luis Echeverría Álvarez. Her interest arose during the 1971 Huey Atlixcáyotl festival when she discovered the millennium-old ahuehuete tree and proposed turning it into the main stage of the event.

A Significant Investment:

According to documents from the municipal historical archive, the construction of the park represented an investment close to 600,000 pesos. The project was brought to life through the collaboration of the municipal president Vicente Alonso Villaroel and the support of Governor Gonzalo Bautista O'Farril. By December 1972, the work was completed, allowing the First Lady to witness the Huey Atlixcáyotl festival in its new setting.

Changes in Traditions and Important Donations:

It is interesting to note that in its early years, the Huey Atlixcáyotl festival was celebrated in December, not in September as it is today. Additionally, the park's floor was donated by the Puebla delegation of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), and the stone slabs, sourced from the old Metepec factory, were a gift that contributed to the creation of this special corner.

A Moved Treasure:

The park houses a granite fountain and a small kiosk that originally belonged to Parque Colón, the main square (zócalo) of Atlixco. Both pieces, which were located on the north side of that area, were moved to Parque del Ahuehuete by the decision of the City Council. This act of preservation adds a touch of history and authenticity to the setting.

A Walk Through Tradition and Nature:

Parque del Ahuehuete offers both visitors and locals a space where history intertwines with natural beauty. Since its inauguration, it has witnessed the evolution of the festivals and has provided a charming setting for events and cultural gatherings.

Exploring this park is immersing yourself in the rich history of Atlixco and enjoying the harmony between tradition and nature.
